Healthy and Nutritional Sag Aloo Recipe

Are you looking for some healthy Indian food you can cook yourself at home? Royal Nawaab has a quick and nutritious recipe for a traditional Indian dish known as Sag Aloo. This is an absolutely delicious dish and is perfect when accompanied with spicy curry and freshly made naan bread.

You can season this dish with black mustard seeds, grated ginger and turmeric and it will have your taste buds tantalised!


2 tbsps ghee or vegetable oil
1 onion, peeled and sliced
1 clove of garlic
1 red chilli, deseeded and sliced
1 tbsp freshly grated ginger
1 level teaspoon black mustard seeds
1 level teaspoon cumin seeds
1 level teaspoon turmeric
500g potatoes, scrubbed and cut into chunks
200-250g bag spinach leaves, washed

  • Heat the ghee or oil in a pan and then add the onion and cook for 4-5 minutes over a medium heat until it starts to soften.
  • Add the garlic, chilli, ginger and spices to the pan and cook for 1 minute
  • Add the potato to the pan with a little water and cook for a further 10-15 minutes making sure that you stir occasionally.
  • Add the spinach and stir until it effortlessly wilts into the mixture
  • Take the black mustard, turmeric and grated ginger and season the saag aloo along with salt until it meets your personal taste
  • Serve with pilau rice and naan bread for a delicious traditional home cooked Indian dish
